Combo Chart

Combo Charts

A combo chart compares data in a few different categories over a period of time. In general, there are two or three types of charts combined together to show a relationship between data points. Typically, a bar chart and a line chart are used together.

Combo Charts are also useful while performing a Pareto analysis, where we can plot a combination of a line and a column chart.

How to Create a Combo Chart:

  • First, you need to go to Visualization Section in Report V2 and select the Combo Chart option.

  • Now in the Build panel go to the X-axis section and Choose or Drop the desired Dimension column preferably a Date column.

  • Now in the Y-Axis section, you need to select 2 relevant Measure columns with proper aggregation functions such as Sum of Sales, Count of Orders, etc along with their respective chart type which you want to plot the Combo Chart. You can choose either between Line Chart or Bar Chart for the selected measure columns.

  • Then Click on the Run Button and your Combo Chart will be ready.

For eg: Let says you want to analyze the Projected Sales vs Actual Sales data over a certain period of time. To achieve this you can create a Combo Chart in Report V2.

First, you will select the Sale's date column in the X-axis section with the respective date function. Then you will select the Projected Sales(Column) and Actual Sales(Line) columns as two measure columns in the Y-axis section.

Now you will need to click on the Run Button and you will have the desired Combo Chart ready using which you can visualize how Actual Sales behaved wrt Projected Sales.

In Reports V2 Combo Chart has two panels Build and Format.

Build

This panel is like a building block for the Combo Chart. It allows you to select various Dimension and Measure columns for creating the Combo Chart.

It is further divided into 3 parts:

Chart Settings: This allows you to select the relevant Dimension and Measure Combos.

  • X-Axis: Here you can select only 1 Dimension Column against which you need to plot the Combo Chart in the X-axis.

  • Y-Axis: Here you need to select 2 Measure Columns with their respective chart type(Line/Column) using which you will plot the Line trends and vertical Columns for Combo Chart.

  • Category: Here you can select any 1 dimension column to further divide the Line Chart & the column charts into different categories each with their separate trends.

Row Limit: This allows you to limit the Output rows by going to the Row Limit section in the Build panel then selecting the number of rows and clicking on the Run Button.

Sort: This allows you to Sort the report based on certain columns. Go to the Sort option at the bottom in the Build panel then choose one or more columns along with the order Ascending or Descending and then click on the Run button.

Format

This panel allows you to apply various formatting techniques on the Combo Chart to make it more customized as per your need. It consists of various different sections which are as follows:

Title

This allows you to give a Title to the Line Chart. You just need to go to the Title section in the Format panel.

You can easily toggle it on or off. In the "Customize title" modal, you can:

  • Modify the title text, font size, and alignment, and even add a background color.

  • Include an optional description that will appear when hovering over the "i" icon that will be visible as a floating button on the tile.

Once done, click the Apply button.

Legend

  • This allows you to showcase the chart legend.

  • By default it is disabled. But you can easily enable it by clicking on the Show Legend toggle button under the legends section under the format panel.

  • Choose from a variety of positions, including top, bottom, left, and right, with options for stacking and centering.

  • For charts with many legends, you can now paginate them or arrange them in multiple rows.

  • Additionally, you can customize the font size, color, family, and style of legend text to match your chart's design.

X-Axis: This allows you to name the X-axis and showcase the axis labels in Combo Chart. It has the following components:

  • Name: Here you can give the name for the X-axis in the Combo Chart.

  • Name Gap: This allows you to decide how far below the X-axis the name should appear.

  • Name Label: This allows you to decide the format of a name given to the X axis like font size, font type, and font family, etc.

  • Axis Label: This allows you to enable/ disable the axis labels in the Combo chart. By default it is disabled and you can easily enable it by clicking on the Show toggle button and then choosing the relevant font format for the axis labels to be displayed in the Line chart.

Y-Axis: This allows you to name the Y-axis and showcase the axis labels in Combo Chart. It has the following components:

  • Name: Here you can give the name for the Y-axis in the Combo Chart.

  • Name Gap: This allows you to decide how far left the Y axis the name should appear.

  • Scale: It allows you to choose the Y-axis scale as per your requirement and data values. You can choose either Linear or Logarithmic scale.

  • Scale Start: Here you need to select the starting point for the Y-axis scale.

  • Scale End: Here you need to select the endpoint of the Y-axis scale. Position: Here you can choose the position of Y axis like whether you want to show the Y-axis scale on LHS or RHS.

  • Name Label: This allows you to decide the format of the name given to the Y-axis like font size, font type, and font family, etc.

  • Axis Label: This allows you to enable/ disable the Y-axis labels in the Combo chart. By default it is disabled and you can easily enable it by clicking on the Show toggle button and then choosing the relevant font format for the axis labels to be displayed in the Combo chart.

Secondary Y-Axis: This allows you to add a secondary Y-axis in your Combo chart. This is generally needed when both the selected Measure columns in the Y-axis have data values with different scales.

It helps in optimizing the final output of the Combo chart and makes it more efficient to interpret.

It has similar components as the primary Y-axis.

For eg: Let says you want to create a Combo chart representing the " Revenue" and the "Number of Orders" over a certain period of time. You can select Revenue with Column chart type and Number of Orders with Line chart type in Y axis section in the Format Panel.

But since here the scale for the "Revenue" and "Number of Order" data points are different (in Crores for Revenue but in Thousands for Number of Orders) so here plotting these two measure columns on a single Y-axis will be wrong. So to tackle this you can use the Secondary Y-axis option to plot the "Number of Order" data points in the Combo chart.

Data Colors: It allows you to select the desired color for showcasing the data points in the Combo Chart as per your need.

By default, it has a color assigned and you can change it by clicking on the Data Colors section in the Format panel then choosing the measure column for which you want to change the color, and finally selecting the color and clicking on Apply button.

Data Labels: It allows you to enable/disable the visibility of data labels in the Combo chart. By default, it will be disabled. It has the following components:

  • Rotate: It allows you to rotate the data labels with respect to the data points as per your need. You can values between 0 to 90 depending upon at what angle you want to rotate the data labels.

  • Align: It allows you to adjust the horizontal alignment of data labels with respect to the data points. You can select either of these three Right, Center and Left alignments.

  • Vertical Align: It allows you to adjust the vertical alignment of data labels with respect to the data points. You can select either of these three Top, Middle, and Bottom alignments.

  • Position: It allows you to adjust the position of data labels with respect to the data points. You can adjust the relevant position by choosing the correct position from the dropdown menu as per your need.

  • Distance: It allows you to adjust the distance between the data labels and data points as per your need. It helps in case you have too many overlapped or congested data points in your Combo Chart as you can easily increase the distance value so that the data labels will have more space and becomes more visible.

Stack: It allows you to enable/disable the stacking of various columns or line trends over each other in the Combo Chart as per your need.

ata Zoom: It allows you to zoom in on the report output as per your need. It is disabled by default so you need to enable it first if you need to zoom in on your report.

It has the following components:

  • Slider: It allows you a slider functionality using which you can scroll through the zoomed-in version of your report(Line Chart). If it is not enabled then you can only view a static zoomed-in part of your report output.

  • Start %: It allows you to set the starting point of your Combo Chart report from where you want to zoom in.

  • End %: It allows you to set the end point of your Combo Chart report up to which you want to zoom in.

Grid Offset: It allows you to adjust the chart grid as per your need. It has 4 offset types: Right, Left, Top, and Bottom.

Field Formatting: This allows you to format field values in selected dimensions and measure columns as per your requirement. It involves changing the field values like the field value's display units, number of decimal places, adding any prefix or suffix, etc.

Gridlines

Here you can configure the appearance of the horizontal gridlines in the background of the chart separating the cells. You can:

  • Choose to show or hide it using the toggle their toggle switch.

  • Also, configure the line width and the color of the lines.
